CANCELLED: Celebrate Cultures in Nature - Groundhog's Day

Discover unique historical tales about the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks as we celebrate different cultures together! Each month, a different culture and celebration will be highlighted, usually with the program presented in multiple languages which allows everyone to fully enjoy the beauty of the land.

This month we will focus on an American tradition called Groundhog’s Day. This time of year, groundhog Punxsutawney Phil checks his shadow in Pennsylvania to confirm if winter is still on for another six cold weeks. In California, his cousin the ground squirrel is enjoying mild temperatures, basking in the sun and eating his stored acorns. Discover how our ground squirrels cope with our “chilly” winter and what they do to survive this season. We will go on a walk to discuss how different cultures predict the winter season as we explore evidence of winter in our canyon.

Reviewing the 1-through-5 Difficulty Ratings will help you evaluate your readiness to participate in this level-2 activity on the land.
