Dig in! Plant with us at the Native Seed Farm

Want to smell things growing and stick your hands into cool, moist earth? Want to have fun while giving back to Nature?

Sign up to help behind the scenes at the Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s one-of-a-kind native seed farm in Irvine! You will be helping us expand the Farm’s impact by planting new plants into our growing fields, and weeding to protect them while they grow. Tools and training with be provided, and no experience is needed.  After a quick ride to the Farm-site in an open-air safari vehicle, you will get introduced to some of our beautiful native wildflowers, and then we’ll dig in! We are adding acreage and several new kinds of plants this year, and would love for you to join with us in this project!

All of the plants you will plant and protect by weeding will flower and bear seed, and those seed will be used to restore habitat within the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks.  Many of the plants you’ll help us grow were selected especially by our Ecologists to be food and shelter for rare and beautiful local animals, like the Coastal Cactus Wren and the Quino Checkerspot Butterfly.

Nestled in a small valley with a panoramic view, the Seed Farm has events for you Wednesdays and Saturdays year round. The tasks will change with the seasons, so there is always something new happening! After this planting and weeding season, we’ll be harvesting seeds from our flowers, doing work in our plant nursery, and much more!   Helping out at the Farm is a great way to get a dose of Nature and learn about the native flowers you see out on the trails.

Planting and weeding is easy and on relatively level ground, but it requires bending and/or kneeling.  Children 8 years and older are heartily welcome, but please be mindful that some parts of our will day require sustained focus and fine motor skills. Those with allergies, please note: because the Farm has flowers, bees are likely present. This time of year has the fewest, but some may be in or near our work area.
