Upper Newport Bay Bioblitz Nature Walk

Interpretive

From July 5th-7th 2019 Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve will host their first annual Bioblitz. This guided hike will train you how to use the inaturalist app and give everyone a chance to contribute!

This year our goal is to establish a baseline of biodiversity to track the impacts of invasive species, climate change, and the positive effects of our habitat restoration projects over time. Join us, become citizen scientists, and make a real contribution to our restoration and preservation programs at Upper Newport Bay!

What is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is a citizen science event that focuses on observing and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. The event helps to provide a “snapshot” of species diversity, providing researchers and the local community with baseline data which may be used to observe change over time.

How do I participate?

You will need a smartphone with the iNaturalist app installed. iNaturalist is a crowdsourced species identification system that allows you to record what you see in nature. It also serves as a way to connect with other nature enthusiasts and to learn more about the natural world. The free app may be.
downloaded for Android or iOS. Once downloaded and logged on, join the Upper Newport Bay 2019 BioBlitz Project on iNaturalist!
