CANCELLED: Grow & Harvest Seed at the Native Seed Farm

Want to have fun while giving back to nature? Then please join the Irvine Ranch Conservancy at our Native Seed Farm! These weekly stewardship activities take place on most Wednesdays and Saturdays year-round. The plants you help grow on the Farm are selected by our ecologists to support natural diversity and ecosystem resilience. Many provide food and shelter for rare, native species like the Coastal Cactus Wren and the Quino Checkerspot Butterfly. The seeds and plants we work with will be used to restore habitats within the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks.

You will participate in a variety of activities that change with the seasons. These may include soil preparation, planting, harvesting, weed removal, and much more. Work is on relatively level ground but may require some bending, stooping, kneeling or crouching, and use of fine motor skills. Tools, gloves, and training are provided. No experience is needed!

Reviewing the 1-5 Difficulty Ratings will help you evaluate your readiness to participate in this Level-2 activity.

Registration will open again at a later date dependent on State and County regulations and to minimize the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19). Please check back for updates. We apologize for the inconvenience.

IRC Volunteer Only Farm Steward Workday: Native Seed Farm

Stewardship
IRC Volunteer Only Farm Steward Workday: Native Seed Farm

IRC Farm Stewards are invited to help at this all-purpose Farm workday!

Our tasks each day are to be determined, but we’ll be tackling whatever jobs are top priority. Harvesting, weeding, cutting back branches- whatever it takes! Activities may include bending, stooping, crouching, squatting, long periods of standing, reaching, pulling, grabbing, and pushing.

We will be divided into two groups of 3 ( Group A & Group B) and spread out on the Farm in order to distance.

Group A & B will work in different zones. The groups will take alternating breaks, and will need to adhere to the standards outlined in your COVID-19 stewardship guidelines below:

These guidelines and procedures are for volunteers who will be working individually or on a small team (three or less) in the field with no public interaction who can implement volunteer work while maintaining the mandatory physical distancing and other protocols. Until further notice and to minimize exposure and transmission of the COVID-19 virus, please review and strictly follow the procedures below.

You must be able to drive or otherwise transport yourself to a staging area, trailhead, or entry point. Transportation of other people is prohibited.

Before leaving your home to report for volunteer work, conduct a self-assessment by

responding to the following questions (current as of May 31, 2020, from the CDC).

1. Are you experiencing any of the following?

  • a. Fever or chills
  • b. Cough
  • c. Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • d. Fatigue
  • e. Muscle or body aches
  • f. Headache
  • g. New loss of taste or smell
  • h. Sore throat
  • i. Congestion or runny nose
  • j. Nausea or vomiting
  • k. Diarrhea

2. Have you had contact with anyone within the last 14 days who has been sick?

If you answered YES to any item above, stay HOME. And stay HOME if you are

not feeling well, even if your symptoms are not on the list above. Please contact

the volunteer management team at activityoperations@irconservancy.org or (714)

508-4760 (call, do not text). Seek medical attention by contacting your doctor or

medical provider.

Seek emergency medical care immediately if you are experiencing any of the following (current as of May 31, 2020, from the CDC):

  • Trouble breathing,
  • Persistent  pain or pressure in the chest,
  • New confusion,
  • Inability to wake or stay awake,
  • Bluish lips or face.
● Pre-fill your personal water containers at home and bring them with you. If you need
to eat during your work shift, bring that with you. IRC is not providing food or beverages.
Do not bring food or beverages to share with others.
● Wear your approved IRC volunteer uniform while on duty, including your IRC
volunteer ID badge. Carry your provided CPR/first aid kit in case you are injured.
On Site at IRC (If necessary)
If it is necessary for you to visit the IRC office, please do not enter the gated area at the present
time (Stage 2). Please access only the enclosed bin area in the front parking lot to pick up or
drop off supplies. Once California and Orange County move into Stage 3, we will re-evaluate
this requirement.
When at the IRC office:
● Wear a face covering at all times, pursuant to the order of the OC Health Officer on
May 28, 2020.
● Maintain a six-foot physical distance at all times and avoid any size group.
● Only one person in the enclosed bin area at a time.
● Make use of hand sanitizer located inside the enclosed bin area when opening and
closing the bin, and when handling items inside the bin.
● If you are returning items to the bin, make sure you sanitize them using the supplies
provided to you by your employee contact. See instructions below.
Tools and Equipment
If tools or other equipment or supplies are required, you must make arrangements in
advance. Employees will provide sanitized tools and equipment for you to use and will maintain
an inventory of the items provided to you.
● Ideally, you will keep the items in your possession for future use to avoid the need for
sanitizing after each use.
● If you are not able to keep the items in your possession, then you must sanitize all items
upon returning to the IRC bin or a storage site. Your employee contact will arrange
sanitation supplies at IRC or the storage site for your use.
You are not to share any tools, equipment, or other items with any other person, including
other volunteers.
If you are returning items, please take the following steps to properly clean and sanitize them:
1. Put on disposable gloves.
2. Use supplies provided by IRC, which will consist of disinfecting wipes or a spray bleach
solution and paper towels.
3. Wipe down commonly touched surfaces on tools, equipment, and other items including
handles, grips, blades, cutting edge, tip, etc.
4. Wipe down outside of the spray bottle, wipe containers, etc.
5. Remember to use the proper technique to safely remove disposable gloves as taught
during first aid training.
6. Dispose of all used wipes, towels, gloves, etc. in the provided trash container.
7. Wash hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer for a minimum of 20 seconds.
While Working in the Field
● We are following State Guidance for face coverings as required per State Guidance. Currently as of June 18, 2020
People in California must wear face coverings when they are in the high-risk
situations listed below:
While outdoors in public spaces when maintaining a physical distance of
