Youth Action Team Stewardship at Augustine
The Youth Action Team, an after school community-service based program throughout the City of Irvine regularly volunteers their time to steward the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. This week, middle school students will spend their afternoon helping to enhance Limestone Canyon! Stewardship activities can include planting native species and weeding at the Augustine Staging Area, nursery work, watering and more. Please help lead this group and provide a wonderful experience they will never forget!

CANCELLED due to Trail Conditions: Bommer Canyon Habitat Restoration
Come get your hands dirty and learn about the restoration process. Please join IRC staff and volunteers in helping restore degraded habitat to pristine habitat in Bommer Canyon, once home to a working cattle ranch. Habitat restoration is important for returning native wildlife and plant species to an area as well as improving ecosystem processes. Just think of the pride you will enjoy when you see the thriving natives over the coming years…. that you directly helped!
No previous experience is needed. Participants must wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and preferably wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Participants must also bring their own water as well as wear sunscreen and hats. Thank you for your continued support of the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks!

Invading weeds degrade habitat for birds and other wildlife. Help us keep wildlife healthy by weeding artichoke thistle from the Quail Hill loop in Irvine. This activity takes place on uneven terrain and sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. All training, tools, and gloves will be provided to ensure your safety and comfort. Rattlesnakes are occasionally seen here and generally avoid people, but protective gear will be provided.

CANCELLED: Keep It Wild – Big Bend
Join Laguna Canyon Foundation and OC Parks at one of our habitat restoration stewardship events in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park as we learn and work together to create a healthier habitat for the native plants and wildlife that call the canyon their home. Depending on the time of year, volunteers will assist with various stewardship events, including removal of non-native plants, seed collection, and/or planting of native plants. No experience is necessary and all tools will be provided. Please wear long pants, close toed shoes and sun protection and bring water. Come out and join the team to help restore the wild lands we all enjoy! Big Bend Staging Area (west side of Laguna Canyon Rd/SR-133, approximately 1 miles south of El Toro Rd.). Age Requirements: Ages 5 – 15 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent. Students 16 – 17 years old are welcome with a waiver signed by a parent/guardian that is collected at the start of the event. IRC Camera Service (MTB) for OC Parks: Limestone
Card pickup and battery replacement for the Irvine Ranch Open Space including Limestone.
Human Access camera card pick up and battery replacement. This volunteer only hiking patrol is to service Human Access cameras.
Route: Limestone Canyon Trails
- Try to have a designated person handle their own designated equipment. One person touching the batteries, one person handling the card case, etc. Wear gloves if you can’t avoid cross handling, unless you are household members.
- Wear face coverings when you can not avoid close proximity. Again unless you are household members.
- Maintain 6ft social distance as per protocol.
- Check-in via text with me as the lead before you head out and when you are finished!

If tools or other equipment or supplies are required, you must make arrangements in
advance.
- Employees will provide sanitized tools and equipment for you to use and will maintain
an inventory of the items provided to you.
● Ideally, you will keep the items in your possession for future use to avoid the need for
sanitizing after each use.
● If you are not able to keep the items in your possession, then you must sanitize all items
upon returning to the IRC bin or a storage site. Your employee contact will arrange
sanitation supplies at IRC or the storage site for your use.
You are not to share any tools, equipment, or other items with any other person, including
other volunteers.
While Working in the Field
● Face coverings may be required. Please follow CDC and County Health guidelines.
● Tools and equipment are not to be shared. Volunteers who are working in small
groups should use only the tools and equipment they brought with them. Under no
circumstances should any tools or equipment be shared.
● There will be a limited supply of hand sanitizer. If available, please use it to clean your
hands after touching commonly handled surfaces and fixtures like gates, locks, portable
restrooms, etc. If hand sanitizer is not available, a cleaning solution and paper towels
should be used.
● Wash hands frequently, including before eating. Some field sites may have running
water; if liquid soap and paper towels are available, please use them. If not, completely
cover your hands with hand sanitizer and rub vigorously for a minimum of 20 seconds.
● Transportation. All volunteers must be able to drive or otherwise transport themselves
to a staging area, trailhead, or entry point. Transportation of other people is prohibited.
All worksites must be reachable on foot or bike, as there are no IRC vehicles available
for volunteers.
● Do not share food or beverages.
● Maintain six-foot physical distancing at all times.
After Working in the Field
● Wash your hands. Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for a minimum
of 20 seconds. If soap and water is not available, use hand sanitizer.
● Clean all tools. If returning tools to the IRC bin or a storage area, wearing disposable
gloves, and using spray or wipes, clean tools and equipment. See the instructions above.
Bring sun protection, wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, a long-sleeved shirt and pants, and a hat for sun protection. Bring water and nourishment snacks.
Bring your day pack and everything you need to keep you healthy on the trail in a wilderness setting. To cancel please contact staff. Our tasks each day are to be determined, but we’ll be tackling whatever jobs are top priority. Harvesting, weeding, cutting back branches- whatever it takes! Activities may include bending, stooping, crouching, squatting, long periods of standing, reaching, pulling, grabbing, and pushing.
We will be divided into two groups of 3 ( Group A & Group B) and spread out on the Farm in order to distance.
Group A & B will work in different zones. The groups will take alternating breaks, and will need to adhere to the standards outlined in your COVID-19 stewardship guidelines below:
These guidelines and procedures are for volunteers who will be working individually or on a small team (three or less) in the field with no public interaction who can implement volunteer work while maintaining the mandatory physical distancing and other protocols. Until further notice and to minimize exposure and transmission of the COVID-19 virus, please review and strictly follow the procedures below.
You must be able to drive or otherwise transport yourself to a staging area, trailhead, or entry point. Transportation of other people is prohibited.
