Programs led by IRC-Certified Volunteers require pre-registration, which closes at 4 p.m. on the day prior to the event. No walk-up registrations will be permitted for these events. Keep It Wild – Restoration at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park
Join Laguna Canyon Foundation and OC Parks at one of our habitat restoration stewardship events in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park as we learn and work together to create a healthier habitat for the native plants and wildlife that call the canyon their home. Depending on the time of year, volunteers will assist with various stewardship activities, including removal of non-native plants, seed collection, seeding and/or planting of native plants. No experience is necessary and all tools will be provided. Please wear long pants, closed-toed shoes and sun protection, and bring water. Youth Action Team Stewardship: Weir Canyon
The Youth Action Team, an after-school community-service based program throughout the City of Irvine regularly volunteers their time to steward the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. High School students will spend their morning helping out in Weir Canyon. Stewardship activities can include planting, weeding and trail maintenance. Please help lead this group and provide a wonderful experience they will never forget!

Sahara Mustard Pull: Baker Canyon
Sahara mustard is a nasty non-native plant that has invaded thousands of acres across Southern California and has encroached at spots on the Irvine Ranch National Natural Landmarks. Now is the time to act to keep this highly invasive plant at bay! Your help is needed to search for and remove any new mustard plants that have come up from seed. This event will include bending, kneeling and walking across slopes and uneven terrain. All training and tools will be provided. We hope you can join us!

Invasive Removal in Upper Weir, Saharan Mustard
Saharan mustard is an invasive nonnative that has made it’s way onto the Irvine Ranch Open Space. Please join us in our efforts to reduce the spread and impact of this weed!
The site we will be working on is directly adjacent to a known population of yellow star thistle. Unfortunately, Saharan mustard has made its way to this area. Early and aggressive removal of this plant will help minimize the spread of this invasive species.
We will meet at Parking Lot C in Irvine Regional Park, and use an IRC vehicle to drive to the site.

CANCELLED due to Trail Conditions: Planting and Nurturing the Limestone Oaks
Please join us to plant Coast Live Oak seedlings in Limestone meadow. We will hike along Limestone Road for approximately 20 minutes along a beautiful oak woodland with no elevation gain. We will be planting using shovels and small handheld tools. No experience necessary.

Monarch Butterfly Stewardship in Bommer
Please join IRC staff plant milkweed and nectar plants for the Monarch butterfly in Bommer Canyon. With your help we will create islands of Milkweed and nectar plants that will help support the seasonal migration of Monach butterflies. We will be using shovels and small handheld tools. CANCELLED due to Trail Conditions: Stewardship Day at the West Sinks View Deck
Please join us as we enhance habitat adjacent to the west viewing deck at the Sinks in Limestone Canyon. This area is characterized by beautiful geological formations that resemble a mini Grand Canyon. Volunteers will travel for approximately 20 minutes in an open-air safari style truck to the project site. The morning will be spent planting and watering native shrubs using small shovels and other tools and will include a 30-minute hike.

Saharan Mustard Pull in Gypsum Canyon
Sahara mustard is a nasty non-native plant that has invaded thousands of acres across Southern California and has encroached at spots on the Irvine Ranch National Natural Landmarks, including this location in Gypsum Canyon. Please help keep this very invasive plant at bay!
There are a number of Sahara Mustard populations in Gypsum Canyon that have been worked for a various number of years, but all are flourishing this year with all the rain and need to be worked hard. This activity will work a population that is along Gypsum Creek and the adjacent flat lands.
Your help is needed to search for, and hand pull plants. Any plants with seed pods will be bagged, all others can be discarded on site. This event will include bending, kneeling and walking up/down/across uneven terrain and the Gypsum Creek bed. All training and tools will be provided although one may want to bring their favorite gloves.

Volunteer Patrol and Stewardship Restore Wildflowers and Wildlife in Agua Chinon Canyon
While enjoying the beautiful sights, sounds, and smells of Agua Chinon located in Limestone Canyon, your volunteerism is needed to remove aggressive weeds (invasives) that threaten to overtake native habitats. Volunteer contributions will give wildflowers room to grow and your efforts will have a lasting impact on the landscape and the wildlife which depend on it. This area is a rarely visited scenic restoration area near the “the Sinks” in Agua Chinon Canyon. We will be walking through uneven terrain and will use various tools to extract plants. Wear sturdy shoes, sun protection, and be ready for vigorous work, depending on how many weeds we find. Activity will involve bending, stooping, kneeling, and pulling and will be off-trail. with little shade. Sturdy footwear, long pants, long sleeves, are recommended. There are a lot of areas to cover and many wildflowers to save so your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Adhere to inclement weather (including rain, trail conditions, and Red Flag Warning) policies. We will contact you if your patrol is cancelled for Fire Watch.
All IRC volunteers must be in IRC uniform (with proper landowner identification/patch), including your badge(s).

Limestone Butterfly Islands Stewardship
Spend your morning helping IRC staff tamp seed into the ground using seed tampers. You will be working within the new Butterfly Islands in Limestone. With your help we will be able to create “islands” of host and nectar plants for butterflies in decline in Limestone Canyon.
