The activities below are offered by a variety of organizations and their dedicated volunteers. All programs are FREE unless noted below. Programs led by IRC-Certified Volunteers require pre-registration, which closes at 4 p.m. on the day prior to the event.  No walk-up registrations will be permitted for these events.     Note: Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for these events. For programs requiring online registration, each adult and child must be registered.

Wildlife Walk at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary

Interpretive

Led by Sea and Sage Audubon in partnership with the Irvine Ranch Water District, Wildlife Walks is a free monthly nature walk for all ages at the beautiful San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. Bring your whole family to celebrate spring as you walk around the butterfly garden, deep ponds, and shallow ponds of the 300-acre freshwater San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. Witness first-hand the interactions between plants and animals as you explore with all your senses under the guidance of our experienced naturalists. Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult. Bring water and sun protection for a walk around water. Come prepared to touch, smell, and hear nature throughout the seasons! Art on the Landmarks: Painting in Fremont Canyon

Interpretive
Dive into the amazing array of color of the canyons on this art in the park program. Bring along your paints, pens, pencils or pastels to create your own creation of the beautiful scenery around you. We will travel to an ideal location in a safari-type vehicle that meets the group’s needs for inspiration. Then, settle in and create your own masterpiece!
Art supplies are not included so please come with your own materials and your keen eye for creation!

Family Hike

Hiking & Fitness

Led by Laguna Canyon Foundation in partnership with OC Parks. Come and enjoy an easy, 2.5-mile family hike over moderate but uneven terrain (45-ft. elevation gain). Starting at the James Dilley Preserve we will hike one of the most diverse areas of the park to Barbara’s Lake and back. Hike is led by Laguna Canyon Foundation naturalist volunteers. Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, James Dilley Preserve (I-5 or 405 south to 133 south to stoplight at 73 toll road; make a U-turn, go 1 block. Dilley is on the right). Second Sunday Limestone Hike: Two Views of The Sinks

Explore beautiful Limestone Canyon on this serene Sunday morning hike to both the east and west viewing decks of The Sinks. This distance hike rewards hikers with panoramic unobstructed views of The Sinks, an ancient and dramatic formation of exposed sandstone cliffs. The trail passes through coastal sage scrub, grasslands, and oak woodlands, and includes sweeping views from Limestone Ridge and both viewing platforms. This 9.5-mile hike moves between 3 and 3.5 mph with one sustained climb and descent, with an elevation change of 1600 feet.

Double Loop: Baker Canyon

Come explore the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks in your backyard! This scenic hike involves steep climbs and descents on both double and singletrack trails and around 1100’ of accumulated climbing elevation. Though challenging, the hike rewards you with sweeping views of the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks and Santa Ana Mountains. On clear days you can see Catalina Island and even beyond Orange County into the Los Angeles Basin.

Moderate-Paced Ride: Limestone Canyon via Hicks Haul Road

Mountain Biking

This is a moderate-paced ride designed for the intermediate rider who has experience and skills, but sometimes needs to move slower in more technical areas with steep descents/ascents. This program is for very physically fit riders in excellent cardio condition. The ride starts at the Augustine staging area and travels along the Hick’s Haul paved road, continuing to Shoestring, Augustine, The Sinks, Raptor, and the adjacent oak woodlands. We will climb approximately 1600 feet over an 11 to 14 mile journey in this 2.5-hour program.

Participants must wear a helmet and carry at least 100 ounces of water, snacks, and spare tubes and tools (in case of flats). Your bike must be trail worthy, with at least a front suspension, and in good working condition. We do NOT ride on bike paths, but rather on hazardous rocky, rutted, sandy fire roads and some singletrack. This is for adult riders only. Electric Mountain Bikes of any class or type are not permitted.

Trail Stewardship

If you enjoy using the wilderness park and aren’t afraid of a little hard work, this is your opportunity to give back by improving the trails. You’ll also learn to see your favorite trails in a new way! Join Laguna Canyon Foundation and OC Parks for a morning of trail maintenance. We’ll be using tools such as loppers, picks, shovels and McLeods to clear brush out of trails, restore features that protect the trails and/or build new features to improve trail sustainability. Ages 17 and up (must have waiver signed by parent). Lunch and refreshments served. Join Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve staff and volunteers in enhancing the Bay’s habitat for local wildlife. Activities may include non-native plant removal, planting natives, watering, trash cleanup, and Butterfly Garden maintenance. No experience is necessary; please bring hat, sunscreen, snacks, etc. Water and tools are provided.

  • Minors ages 16 and younger must have legal guardian present at all times.

Equestrian

Enjoy a docent-led ride through rolling canyons in spectacular Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve to the Sinks – Orange County’s own mini “Grand Canyon.” Our ride will take us through lush meadows to admire breathtaking views of the coastal hillsides and see a diversity of plants, animals and a variety of other native wildlife.

Equestrians with trail riding experience, a fit and able horse, and the ability to trailer to the staging area are welcome to join the ride. Owners of unshod horses, please note that footing may include areas of gravel and pavement.

Native Plant Nursery at Quail Hill

Please join us at the Community Stewardship Native Plant Nursery located at the Quail Hill Trailhead in Irvine. This month, help us plant native species . We will be working along the Quail Hill Loop off of the trailhead parking lot. Your work at the nursery will help to enhance the native habitat – directly benefiting the local wildlife!
