IRC Volunteers are needed to help lead and support a fun day for Earthroots Field School youth at OC Parks’ Black Star Canyon Wilderness Park in Baker Canyon on Thursday, February 13th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for an interactive day. Youth will engage in a fun hike to explore the geology and ecology of the area, followed by nature journaling of their observations. Then after their own provided lunch, they will assist in stewardship work. Their staff will assist in leading discussions with IRC Volunteers assisting in working gates and restrooms, providing group management, and sharing interpretive stories of the area.

About the group:

  • 15 students ages 6 – 14 years
  • Class held 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., arrive by 8:45 a.m. depart by 2:15 p.m.
  • Two instructors with the group always, parents welcome as chaperones
  • Thursday, Feb. 13 @ Baker Canyon
  • Thursday, May 8 @ Bommer Canyon, Cattle Camp
  • Activity breakdown: introduction hiking to the area (geology, ecology, ranch history), nature journaling, stewardship activity
  • Earthroots Field School staff Macy and assistant instructor Bella help lead activity
