Enjoy self-guided access in the southern portion of Irvine’s Open Space Preserve. The entire southern Open Space Preserve trail network will be open for self-guided hiking and biking from 8 am to 1 pm. This includes the single tracks in Shady Canyon and Bommer Canyon that are reserved for guided activities only. Registration is required for this event. The Bommer Canyon Cattle Camp will be available for parking, but please take note that your vehicle must be removed from the Cattle Camp area by 1 pm.
Special Notice: Parking at the Bommer Canyon Cattle Camp is extremely limited due to ongoing construction and will be available on a first come-first serve basis. Additional parking may be available at the Bommer Canyon Trailhead and Turtle Rock Community Park. Alternate parking options also include the Quail Hill Trailhead, Quail Hill Community Center and Laguna Coast Wilderness Park.
Please note that you are asked to adhere to the following measures in order to participate:
- Registration for this activity is REQUIRED.
- Arrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail, including water, proper attire, and footwear, first aid, medications, etc.
- Restrooms will be available, but facilities will not be sanitized for each individual.
- You may be prevented from participating if you do not adhere to the above protocols.
Additionally, in an effort to respect and protect all employees, volunteers, and participants, please do not sign up or attend if you are not feeling well, exhibiting any symptoms of illness or have been in recent contact with someone who was ill.
Bommer Canyon Exploration Day Participation policies:
- City of Irvine Open Space Patrol require all trails to be cleared for closure by 1 PM.
- Failure to remove your vehicle from the Cattle Camp by 1 pm will subject you to citation.
- Dogs are not permittedĀ in the Irvine Open Space Preserve.
- Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
- All mountain bicyclists must wear a helmet at all times while on Irvine Open Space trails.
- Motorized recreation vehicles of any class or type are not permitted for use in the Nature Preserve.
- You may choose to enter the trail system from other surrounding locations, Quail Hill, Laguna Coast, El Moro, but you must be off of the Irvine “scheduled program only” trails by 1 pm.
- Gates will be closed and you will be subject to citation if you are found to be on the Irvine “scheduled program only” trails before 8 am or after 1 pm
- The availability for self-guided trail access is limited to the date and hours of this event only.
- Parking, updated maps and information will be available at the Cattle Camp in Bommer Canyon during open hours.
