Enjoy a 4.2 miles hike while we explore plant communities of Whiting Ranch as builders of this beloved wilderness oasis. This out-and-back program travels 4.2 miles round trip to scenic Red Rock Canyon and back down, with 460 ft elevation gain. Participants will be introduced to the plant communities of WRWP as the trail transitions from lush oak woodlands and freshwater marshes to the drier environments of upper Red Rock Canyon. A goal of this program is to enrich the hiking experience of participants through knowledge and appreciation for WRWP plant communities, their beauty, uniqueness and contribution to the ecosystem diversity and functions.
We will stop at the Paleontology and Geology panels along the trail, Geology of Red Rock Canyon, where spectacular red sandstone cliffs surround the trail, witness to a distant past where mammoths, camels and rhinoceros were once abundant in the area.
We meet at Whiting Ranch Park entrance at 26701 Portola Pkwy, Lake Forest, next to Ralph’s grocery store. Parking space is limited at the entrance but plentiful across the street. Bring closed-toe hiking shoes or boots, water and a hat.
