Join us every Monday night for a fitness-focused hike on the paved Hicks Haul Road in the Irvine Open Space Preserve. During the spring, summer and fall, hikers will enjoy wonderful sunset views and a panoramic overview of Orange County. This hike travels about 3.5 miles, up to the top of Loma Ridge and back down. The hike is conducted at about 3-3.5 miles per hour, but you may travel a bit faster or slower, at a walk, run, or jog depending on your comfort level. Most participants finish the route in about 1 hour. Because of the paved surface of the road, you may wear regular running or walking shoes. Trail shoes are fine, but not required. Please bring adequate water.

Join us for a relaxed, beginner-friendly hike through scenic Round Canyon, where we’ll explore the natural world using the iNaturalist app. As we walk along this fairly flat and easy trail, we’ll pause to observe plants, insects, birds, and other interesting finds—learning how to photograph and identify them with iNaturalist.

This activity is perfect for those curious about local wildlife, or anyone who wants to learn how to use iNaturalist to contribute to community science. We’ll guide you through the process of creating observations and highlight how your contributions support research and conservation in our area.

The hike will cover 2–3 miles round trip at an easy pace with a moderate level of interpretation. This is a great outing for those looking for a slower-paced experience with time to stop, observe, and engage with the environment.

If you’ve got kids showing an interest in mountain biking and want them to learn practical bike handling skills, then join us for the IRC Kid’s Rider Skills Clinic.  The class begins with an overview of bicycle safety and clinic fundamentals followed by a series of exercises demonstrating rider-influenced bike maneuvers such as front & rear wheel lifts, hops, drop/roll-offs, late & emergency braking and cornering techniques over pavement, loose dirt, rocks, logs, ruts & potholes. Watch your budding riders enjoy a fun-filled morning on their bikes while developing confidence navigating rocks, ruts/potholes, step-ups/drop-offs, emergency braking and cornering.

Come out and join us on a breathtaking hike from the Irvine Open Space Preserve into OC Parks’ Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve. This week’s docent-led hike begins in the Agua Chinon wash, continues to The Sinks, and may include a side trip to Box Springs, a natural year-round source of fresh water.

Maximum distance is just short of 8 miles, with some sustained climbing in one section. Participants must wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes. Remember to pack plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and all other necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail. If you are new to mountain biking and interested in getting started the right way, or if you are an intermediate rider wanting to broaden your existing bike skills, this is the clinic for you!

Class begins with an overview of rider fundamentals: Balance, Body Position, and Wheel Placement. You will learn which is your “Chocolate Foot,” why the mantra ‘Heavy Feet / Light Hands” is essential, and how to “Fly Your Head Like a Cheetah.” Theory will always be followed by a cycle of demonstration, practice and feedback. Difficulty will be tuned for individual participants with levels for Beginner, Experienced, and Challenge. These riding techniques will be taught and practiced at the Mountain Bike Skills Development area.

If you are new to mountain biking and interested in getting started the right way, or if you just want to hone your existing skills developing terrain-influenced bike handling over several types of man-made features, this is the clinic for you! The class begins with a brief overview of rider fundamentals starting with platform position and weight transfer then covering equipment basics & setup, braking, gearing and a brief bike maintenance Q&A session followed by a series of exercises demonstrating terrain-influenced bike handling over a variety of man-made features including log piles, rock step-ups, A-frames and many more.
