CANCELLED: Earthcache Hike to the Coal Mine in Fremont Canyon

Celebrate Earth Day with a trip to an earthcache! Join us on this evening hike to the abandoned coal mine in Fremont Canyon. Beginning from Santiago Creek, we will hike up the Coal Mine Road to the coal seam that is visible along the road. Once here, there will be ample time given for those who desire to record notes for logging the Coal Seam-Fremont Canyon earthcache as found. If time, we will continue our ascent to the Fremont Weather Station where winds in excess of 100 mph are often recorded. We will then head back, descending the Coal Mine Road while we enjoy the far-reaching views of Orange County and the Santa Ana Mountains.

Reviewing the 1-through-5 Difficulty Ratings will help you evaluate your readiness to participate in this level-4 activity on the land.

This challenging hike includes an 1100-foot elevation change, but you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Orange County and the Cleveland National Forest. Please bring a minimum of 70 oz. water and trail snacks.
