Want to have fun while giving back to Nature? Like to play in the dirt?
Sign up to help behind the scenes at the Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s one-of-a-kind native seed farm in Irvine! You will be working to helping us expand the Farm’s impact by planting new plants into our growing fields, and weeding to protect them while they grow. Tools, knee pads and training will be provided. No experience needed!
Helping out at the Farm is a great way to get a dose of Nature and learn about the native wildflowers you see out on the trails. Green thumbs and brown thumbs are both welcome here!
You will get introduced to some of the beautiful native wildflowers we grow, there will be a mini “How-to” lesson on planting, and then we’ll dig in. We have just moved to a brand new location, and would love for you to join us as we start afresh! This is activity is Level 1 on the Difficulty Rating. Reviewing the 1-5 Difficulty Ratings will help you evaluate your readiness to participate in this activity.
In just a few months, the baby plants you’ve put in the ground and defended from weeds will soon flower and bear seed. Those seeds will be used to restore habitat within the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Many of the plants you’ll help us grow were selected especially by our staff ecologists to be food and shelter for rare and beautiful local animals, like the Coastal Cactus Wren and the Quino Checkerspot Butterfly.
The Seed Farm has events for you Wednesdays and Saturdays year round. The tasks will change with the seasons, so there is always something new happening! After this planting and weeding season, we’ll be harvesting seeds from our flowers and continuing to protect them as they grow.
Planting and weeding is easy and on relatively level ground, but it requires bending, sitting, reaching, and/or kneeling. Children 8 years and older are heartily welcome, but please be mindful that some parts of our will day require sustained focus and fine motor skills. Those with allergies, please note: because the Farm has flowers, bees are likely to be present.
