It's Harvest Time! Collect Wildflower Seeds at the Native Seed Farm

Want to smell the sun-dried sweetness of summertime? Want to feel the crunch of crispy golden brown pods?  Come and refresh your senses while giving back to Nature! Absolutely no experience required.

Sign up to help behind the scenes at the Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s one-of-a-kind Native Seed Farm in Irvine.  You will be harvesting seeds from our quirky native Summer wildflowers, like Yellow Pincushions and Heart-leaved Beard Tongue. Just bring a reusable water bottle for yourself,  and all tools and training with be provided.  You will get introduced to some of our beautiful native plants, and then we’ll get to work!

The seed you will pick has a direct impact on our local wildlife.  All of the seeds you pick will be used to restore animal habitat within the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks.  Many of the types you’ll help us harvest were selected especially by our Ecologists to be food and shelter for rare and beautiful local animals, like the Coastal Cactus Wren and the Quino Checkerspot Butterfly. Restoring native plants is also a very important way to protect the land from having wildfires too frequently.

Nestled in a small valley with a panoramic view, the Seed Farm has events for you Wednesdays and Saturdays year round. The tasks will change with the seasons, so there is always something new happening. After this harvesting season will come nursery work, weeding, planting and much more!  Helping out at the Farm is a great way to get a dose of Nature and learn about the wild flowers you see out on the trails.

Harvesting is easy and on relatively level ground, but working with our shortest flowers can require bending and stooping. Children 8 years and up are welcome, but please be mindful that some parts of our will day require sustained focus and fine motor skills. Those with allergies please note: because the Farm has things in bloom, some bees are likely to be working in or around our work area. When you sign up, check the automatic email you’ll get to see tips on what to wear.
