Western Pond Turtle Monitoring: Shady Canyon

 

The western pond turtle (Actinemys pallida) is the only native freshwater turtle in coastal California. In collaboration with United States Geological Survey (USGS), IRC volunteers will be assisting with the data collection, monitoring traps, and other duties that will help USGS staff.

The work should be completed by 4 PM. Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, bring food and water.

This activity is for ponds in Shady Canyon and requires an IRC vehicle to follow USGS or IRC volunteers must meet USGS staff at the following GPS location: meet at the gate at 33.628545, -117.760214 off of Laguna Canyon Road at 8 AM, Or, you will use IRC vehicle with another IRC driver and/or staff. 

 

Please sanitize your boots and any of your own equipment before and after visiting the area.

USGS recommends a 10% bleach solution but alcohol and other cleaning agents will do. We will sanitize equipment that we provide such as waders, thermometers, and secchi disks.
