Activities and Programs

The activities below are offered by a variety of organizations and their dedicated volunteers. All programs are FREE unless noted below. Programs led by IRC-Certified Volunteers require pre-registration, which closes at 4 p.m. on the day prior to the event.  No walk-up registrations will be permitted for these events. Watering the Native Plant Nursery at Quail Hill

Watering the Native Plant Nursery at the Quail Hill Trailhead, inside the gated yard off the parking lot. Germinating seeds under the black shade cloth: water under the mist setting to moisten soil and cover back with shade cloth. All other grass plugs and 4″ pots not covered: water under the shower setting once. The larger, gallon sized pots do not need to be watered unless noted prior to your shift. Watering can occur at any time during your said available days.

 

**No need to water during rainy days.

Birds and other wildlife need healthy habitat to thrive. Simple things like planting native plants can greatly improve habitat for wildlife. You can be part of that positive impact while enjoying the beauty of Buck Gully near Newport Beach. This activity takes place on sloped terrain and sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. All training, tools, and gloves will be provided to ensure your safety and comfort. Rattlesnakes are occasionally seen here and generally avoid people, but protective gear will be provided.

Seeking Ranger Reserves and OC Parks Volunteers to assist with backcountry patrol of park trails. Patrolling the trails is at times strenuous and will include passing out maps, educating public about importance of keeping their dogs on a leash and making a presence on the trails. Other duties may include repairing broken fencing, checking for graffiti and investigating illegal trail use in Weir canyon. Hours are flexible.

Ranger Reserve-Santiago Oaks Park Wedding and Reception

Provide excellent customer service and resource protection at Santiago Oaks Regional Park during wedding and reception events.
Santiago Oaks Park has a special event area that provides an outdoor venue for weddings and receptions. There are two small but charming grass areas for wedding ceremonies and receptions. The area is adjacent to the historic orange grove and under the canopy of majestic oak and sycamore trees. Also available for weddings and receptions is a bride’s changing room and conference room with a fully equipped kitchen. Weddings and Receptions are the only types of events allowed at Santiago Oaks event center. Often the customer will opt for having both the wedding ceremony and the reception at Santiago Oaks but sometimes it is a wedding only event. Receptions without a wedding are not permitted. The events are limited to 100 people which includes all vendors, wedding party and guests. Alcohol is allowed only with a permit obtained in advance from OC Parks Permits Department and served by a licensed bartender under the supervision of a security guard.
Duties and responsibilities of the Park Ranger Reserves will include reviewing the customer rental agreement and permit for details pertaining to the day’s scheduled activities and vendors, directing permitted vendors such as caterers, florists and rental companies where to load and unload supplies and equipment and park, unlock and open facility rooms, check restrooms for cleanliness and supplies**, oversee trash receptacles do not become overfilled**, redirect inappropriately parked guests***, troubleshoot minor maintenance issues, for events with permits for alcohol oversee that no alcohol is served before the scheduled time and oversee the on-time arrival of the security guard, redirect wedding party members and guests that stray into “out of bounds” areas, oversee decorations are affixed in an approved manner to walls or structures, oversee set up and clean up times are within the scheduled times as noted on the rental agreement,
**A groundskeeper will be onsite to provide janitorial services-if trash receptacles or restrooms need attention please notify Ranger as soon as possible.
***All other parking control will be provided by the park department’s contracted company for parking- Parking Concepts Incorporated (PCI).

Please note- Required prior to signing up for this activity:
Schedule a mutually agreed upon day and time for a “one-time” meeting with Ranger for more specific duty details which will include an overview of the “Terms and Conditions” of the facility rental agreement, how to read and what to look for on an OC Parks Permit and a tour of the facility. You may expect this meeting to last 45 minutes to one hour.

Join Irvine Ranch Conservancy staff during monthly habitat stewardship activities at Irvine Regional Park, aimed at keeping the park’s trails and habitat healthy. Identified in collaboration with the Park Rangers that patrol the trails everyday, stewardship projects can include planting to combat the effects of off-trail use, removing invasive plant species that threaten to crowd out the diversity of native plants, and more!

Join Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve staff and volunteers in enhancing the Bay’s habitat for local wildlife. Activities may include non-native plant removal, planting natives, watering, trash cleanup, and Butterfly Garden maintenance. No experience is necessary; please bring hat, sunscreen, snacks, etc. Water and tools are provided.

  • Minors ages 16 and younger must have legal guardian present at all times.
