The activities below are offered by a variety of organizations and their dedicated volunteers. All programs are FREE unless noted below. Programs led by IRC-Certified Volunteers require pre-registration, which closes at 4 p.m. on the day prior to the event. No walk-up registrations will be permitted for these events. Intermediate Trail Run in Gypsum Canyon

Join us for an intermediate and challenging, early morning TRAIL RUN in Gypsum Canyon. Along the way we’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Orange County. This approximately 6.5 mile run is completed at an average of 12 minutes per mile with an approximate overall elevation gain of 1000 feet. This run is for experienced adult physically fit runners who enjoy the challenge of multiple steep climbs and descents. There will be 2 stops to regroup on this 6.5 mile run in a wilderness setting.

Early Morning Hike: Gypsum Canyon Wilderness

Come explore the newly opened Gypsum Canyon Wilderness, the northernmost portion of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. This scenic hike involves steep climbs and descents on several single-track trails and is done at an average moving pace of 3 miles per hour. The rewards are many: panoramic views of Fremont and Weir Canyon Nature Preserves and beyond, possible wildlife sightings, interesting rock formations, and beautiful wildflowers in season.

Plants Among Us: Learning About Plants at Gypsum Canyon Wilderness

Curious to learn about the plants among us? Join us for a hike at Gypsum Canyon Wilderness where we’ll look at local flora, talk about native and non-native species, and learn how different plants impact our ecosystems. Learning to identify plants, both native and non-native, is a great way to cultivate a relationship to our local wildlands.
This hike will take us up a portion of Gypsum Canyon Road or Oven Canyon Road. This activity is geared toward participants curious about our local plants and ecosystem. Please bring water, closed-toe shoes and all items needed to keep you safe during our walk. Hats and sunscreen are highly recommended.

Two lookout points offer sweeping views of the surrounding canyons and unique prehistoric rock formations. Multiple loop options that vary in distance and range from easy to moderate in difficulty are available for self-guided exploration.
Gypsum Canyon Wilderness is comprised of protected and preserved native habitats that a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, red-tailed hawks, California gnatcatchers and bobcats, call home.
Rain or inclement weather will cancel the program.

Moderate Paced Mountain Bike Ride – Gypsum Canyon

Gypsum is a new addition to OC Parks wilderness park offerings and while compact in size it has five new single-track trails that wander up to and around an overlook providing panoramic and interesting views of Gypsum Canyon and the surrounding lands.
Reviewing the 1-through-5 Difficulty Ratings will help you evaluate your readiness to participate in this level-3 activity on the land. Electric Mountain Bikes of any class or type are not permitted.
