The Tecate Cypress is a rare species found only in southern California and northern Baja California. Unfortunately, the northern most population in the Santa Ana Mountains is in severe decline due to too-frequent wildfires. In effort to protect this rare species, locally genetic trees have been planted in Fremont Canyon, in close proximity to the staging area. Join us as we deeply water and weed around the young trees. Your work will ensure the newly-planted Tecate has all they need to thrive, and will directly help the effort to ensure the persistence of this unique forest community here in Orange County!

Are you a nature lover, hiker, gardener, or just need to get outside to refresh yourself? Does the idea of adopting a canyon across four seasons and being part of a longer term project interest you? Please come help Irvine Ranch Conservancy restore local habitat, native plants, and wildlife so they may thrive in the canyon of Agua Chinon. No experience is necessary other than a desire to explore and care for our open space. Participants may engage in plant identification, removal of invasive weeds, and planting native plants.

Identified in collaboration with the Park Rangers that patrol the trails everyday, stewardship projects can include planting to combat the effects of hiking, biking and riding off-trail, removing invasive plant species that threaten to crowd out the diversity of native plants, and more!

No previous experience is needed, however please note that we may be hiking up steep trails.

Birds and other wildlife need healthy habitat to thrive. Simple things like weeding and watering native plantings can greatly improve habitat for wildlife. You can be part of that positive impact! All training, tools, and gloves will be provided to ensure your safety and comfort. Note that this activity is held on the 4th Wednesday of each month.

Join in and help Irvine Ranch Conservancy land stewards remove invasive plants such as Tree Tobacco, Sahara mustard and puncture vine in Orchard Hills. Our trailside stewardship will reduce the spread of these invasive plants, improve the beauty of the Orchard Hills loop trail and reduce flat tires from puncture vine! We will be hand pulling and removing big plants with tools. Please come prepared with sturdy shoes, water and appropriate sun protection. Gloves and tools will be provided.

Volunteer Stewards and Land Stewards are needed to help support a corporate group stewardship activity. We will be trimming overgrown shrubs on Shoestring for fire prevention and trail enhancement. Your help is needed for group management. IRC volunteers will help to distribute tools, transport volunteers to project site and guide volunteers along the project area and route.

You can be part of that positive impact while enjoying the beauty of Buck Gully near Newport Beach. This activity takes place on sloped terrain and sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. All training, tools, and gloves will be provided to ensure your safety and comfort. Rattlesnakes are occasionally seen here and generally avoid people, but protective gear will be provided.

Please join us at the Community Stewardship Native Plant Nursery located at the Quail Hill Trailhead in Irvine. We have been growing native Sagebrush, Buckwheat and Cobweb thistle at the nursery. Help us to plant the nursery grown plants, as well as weed out pesky Russian thistle (tumbleweed) seedlings to ensure the newly planted natives have room to thrive. This is a unique opportunity to help propagate plants at a nursery and plant them in the ground – all in the same location. Your work at the nursery will help to enhance the native habitat and directly benefit the local wildlife!
