OC Parks is implementing the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to support agency mission and goals. Operated by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107-certified pilots, UAS will be used for missions including site inspection and monitoring.
Requesting Ranger Reserve assistance with the role of Visual Observer (VO) for a habitat restoration monitoring project at Gypsum Canyon Wilderness on Feb 1 from 7:30 am to 11:30 am.
This person will act as a flight crew member who assists the Pilot In Command (PIC) with seeing and avoiding other air traffic or objects aloft or on the ground. Other duties may include directing park visitors away from the site of operations, and assisting with the staking of Ground Control Points throughout the area.
If working at a different location to that of the PIC, the VO shall maintain constant communication with the PIC through use of a park radio/phone. They must be able to effectively communicate:
• The UAS location, altitude, and direction of flight
• The position of other aircraft or hazards in the airspace
• The determination that the UAS does not endanger the life or property of
another
• Any wildlife such as airborne birds who may have entered the airspace
while the UAS is in flight
This person will follow and adhere to provided training and safety guidelines from the OC Parks UAS Standard Operating Procedures document.
This task may also include hiking up to 1.5 miles.
