Come help OC Parks perform restoration site prep along Rinker Grove Trail at Santiago Oaks Regional Park!
This is a Level 4 difficulty rating for Habitat Restoration. Be prepared for some tough work. Site prep includes clearing 5ft of brush from approximately 100 plant sites in preparation for acorn planting to give these trees the best chance for survival. Much of the area is currently covered in dried thistles and mustard, which will need to be pulled, bagged, and removed from the area. This is both on and off-trail work. Heavy duty work gloves, long pants, and snake gaiters are recommended. Tools available on site, however, volunteers are welcome to bring their own preferred (non-motorized) tools for use.
Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and snacks.
Staging area is outside the Santiago Oaks Nature Center. Volunteers do NOT have to stay for the entire 4 hours, any help is greatly appreciated! The project is open for registration to OC Parks volunteers only, if you have family or friends interested in helping, please reach out for short term volunteer information.
About the Project:
The project seeks to restore Rinker Grove to native tree habitat and help stamp out invasive species that have taken over the area. Rinker Grove was developed extensively during the early 20th century with orchards and non-native/exotic trees planted in the area. This project aims to restore the native oak grove which helped give the park its name by seeding for 100 new oaks in the area.
Registration is closed for this activity.
